Both asthma and allergy result from an exaggerated response by the body's immune system. Instead of ignoring commonly ingested substances like pollen, animal or dust mites, immune cells view them as threats and try to fight them off. In people with asthma, this results in a constricted, swollen airway, which leads to coughing or wheezing and difficult breathing. People with allergy, on the other hand, experience watery eyes, sneezing, running or itching nose, and a sore throat.

Conventional medical treatments for allergies and asthma are designed to prevent and treat symptoms. For people with asthma, broncho dilators are given to relax the bronchial muscles and make it easier to breath. Anti-inflammatories help reduce the swelling in constricted airways. The most effective anti-inflammatories are steroids and are most commonly given in an inhaled form. Persistent asthma may be treated with non-steroidal medicines that also reduce the inflammation associated with asthma. People with allergy are treated with antihistamines (to prevent the sneezing, itchy eyes and runny nose symptoms) and decongestants. These medications may be taken in pill or spray form. Anti inflammatory medicines like corticosteroids and cromolyn, are also used to decrease the inflammation and usually come in nasal spray form.

Treatment

In Ayurveda there are some wonder plants which have been traditionally used as a folk remedy in certain regions of India for the treatment of bronchial asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism, and dermatitis.
